Elbow pain

Elbow injury and pain has a positive response to chiropractic and physiotherapy treatment when treated early and an accurate diagnosis is made. Elbow pain is commonly caused by a number of physical and sporting activities, as well as problems within the neck joints. Repetitive work tasks related to certain occupations can also contribute to elbow pain.

 

 

Risk factors

Risk factors for elbow pain include:

 

  • Activities that involve repetitive movement of the forearm, wrist and fingers
  • Poor movement techniques, such as gripping a handle or twisting a jar
  • Age – elbow pain is common for people 40+ years.

 

Symptoms

Elbow pain symptoms include:

 

  • Pain when trying to latch and hold objects, especially when the arm is stretched out
  • Dull ache when the elbow is at rest
  • Weak grip
  • Soreness and tenderness around the elbow and/or elbow bump
  • Pain when opening the elbow (known as tennis elbow)
  • Pain when making a fist (known as golfer’s elbow).

 

Causes

There are a number of causes of elbow pain, with the most common cause being overuse and sports injuries. Sports such as golf, tennis and boxing can contribute to elbow pain and injuries.

There are also many other conditions and events that can cause elbow pain, these include:

 

  • Poor athletic technique, especially sports that put strain on the elbow joint
  • Repetitive hands and arm movements, for example workers that work on a factory line and repeat the same motion
  • Unsuitable sporting equipment, such as the wrong golf club or tennis racquet
  • Repetitively picking up heavy loads with force on the muscles and joints
  • Not warming up before physical exercise
  • Problems in the neck joints
  • Arthritis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Tendon sheath inflammation
  • Tendinitis
  • Bursitis
  • Rheumatic fever.
