Hip pain

The hip joint is designed to withstand wear and tear and repeated motion. However, hip pain is common and can occur due to a range of different causes. Hip pain is a general term for pain felt in and around the hip joint or in the region of the thigh and groin.

 

Prevalence

The occurrence of hip pain and fractures increases with age, this is often due to bone density, muscle mass, and problems with vision and balance causing falls.

 

Risk factors

Risk factors of hip pain can include:

 

  • Excessive weight-bearing
  • Bone structure
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Nutritional problems
  • Low back pain
  • Chronic medical conditions, such as overactive thyroid, cognitive impairment and intestinal disorders
  • Hip fracture
  • Physical inactivity.

 

Symptoms

Symptoms of hip pain often include:

 

  • Limping
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Pain in the hip joint
  • Reduced range of motion.

Possible causes of hip pain include:

 

  • Broken hip
  • Sprains and strains
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Hip fractures
  • Gynecological and back issues
  • Hernia
  • Tendinitis and bursitis.
