Neck pain

Around 50% of people will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Every month, almost 39% of the population will say they have had neck pain. This shows that the prevalence of neck pain in Australia is very high. Neck pain is often associated with headache, and headaches are experienced by 20 – 30% of Australian’s at some point in their lives.

 

Research suggests that when a person has an episode of neck pain they are more likely to experience another. Recurrences, episodes and persistent symptoms are common, yet only 20% of people with neck pain will seek treatment.

 

Neck pain is complex and should be treated by a chiropractor with extensive experience in the treatment of neck pain. There is much that can be done by a chiropractor for neck pain.

 

Risk factors

There are several known factors associated with neck pain, these include:

 

  • Previous history of neck pain
  • Female sex
  • More common as we age, until about 50 and then settles
  • More common in those with headache or back pain
  • Heavy and repetitive work
  • Sitting occupations
  • Occupations requiring lots of neck flexion.

 

Who is more likely to get it?

There is limited prognostic data of neck pain however there is some data to suggest the following make you more likely to get neck pain:

 

  • Previous history of neck pain
  • Serve initial episode of neck pain
  • Older age
  • Stress.
